The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council has made provision for Reciprocal Recognition/Registration for medical/dental practitioners who are EAC Nationals and who qualify from the accredited/Recognized EAC Partner States Medical/Dental Schools (list available on https://kmpdc.go.ke/list-of-approved-medical-dental-schools/) under the EAC Protocol.

Under the Protocol, the said doctors are exempted from sitting the Council’s pre-registration exams for those who have already completed their internship program in the country of training.

The practitioners must:

  1. Be an East African National
  2. Produce a copy of Passport/ National ID
  3. Produce a colored passport size photo
  4. Provide a certificate of internship completion
  5. Provide evidence of Provisional/ Permanent Registration by EAC Partner State Medical Board/ Council
  6. Produce certified copies of academic/professional certificates
  7. Produce up to date Curriculum Vitae
  8. Have a Certificate of Status (Good Standing)
  9. pay the application fee Kshs.5,000.00 (50USD)
  10. Evaluation of qualification papers Kshs.30,000.00 (300USD)

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council has the duty to ensure that the practitioners licensed are fit to practice. That means that they do not have any impairment that may limit how they deliver their duties. “impairment” means a mental, social, or physical condition which affects or has the potential to affect competence, attitude, judgement or performance of professional acts by a registered practitioner.

Includes:

  •         Serious or persistent failure to meet institutional or professional minimum standards of practice;
  •         Reckless or deliberate acts that potentially affect or harm self, colleagues and patients, relative of patients and others;
  •         Concealing professional errors or impeding investigations into the same;
  •         sexual misconduct or indecency;
  •         Improper relationships with service users or colleagues;
  •         Failure to respect the autonomy of service users;
  •         Violence or threatening behavior;
  •         Dishonesty, fraud or an abuse of trust;
  •         Exploitation of a vulnerable person;
  •         Substance abuse or misuse;

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council issues certificate of status to practitioners, at their will, when one is seeking employment/ studies abroad, for purposes of postgraduate training the doctor seeks for a “Certificate of Status” (generally called a “good standing” certificate).

On the specific date and time, the Council issues a certificate verifying that the practitioner is in “good standing” meaning that all documents and fees required by law to be submitted to the Council have been received, and that the particular practitioner does not have any disciplinary issues pending.
