KENYA MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS AND DENTISTS COUNCIL COMMITTEES

The Training, Assessment, Registration and Human Resource Committee is established under section 4A.(1)(a) of CAP 253.

 Its
functions include:

  • Accrediting, regulating and
    inspecting all medical schools, dental schools, internship training centers, continuing
    professional development and continuing education program providers.
  • Indexing all medical and dental
    students.
  • Conducting internship
    qualifying examinations, pre-registration and pre-internship examinations by
    the Council and peer reviews.
  • Reviewing post-graduate
    qualifications for the purpose of awarding specialist recognition.
  • Scrutinizing applications for
    approving specialists and sub-specialist status.
  • Approving the registration of
    medical practitioners and dentists.
  • Implementing the continuing
    professional development programs by the Council.
  • Monitoring and ensuring
    compliance with the continuing professional development.
The Inspections, Licensing, Finance & General-Purpose Committee is established under section 4A.(1)(c) of CAP 253.

Its functions include:
  • Issuing licenses to all eligible medical and dental practitioners and the premises for the practice of medicine.
  • Inspecting clinics, health and medical centres, mortuaries, maternity and nursing homes, hospitals (private, faith-based and Government).
  • Reviewing all applications for licenses to engage in private practice by medical and dental practitioners.
  • Maintaining a register of all persons and facilities licensed under these Rules.
  • Reviewing the fees charged in private practice by medical and dental practitioners, from time to time.
The Disciplinary & Ethics Committee is established under section 4A.(1)(b) of CAP 253.

Its functions include:
  • Conducting Inquiries into complaints submitted to it.
  • Regulating professional conduct.
  • Ensuring fitness to practice and operate.
  • Promoting mediation and arbitration between parties.
  • At its own liberty, recording and adopting mediation agreements or compromise between parties, on the terms agreed.
The Audit and Risk Committee is established under section 4A(1) of CAP 253.

Its functions include:
  • Obtain assurance from management that all financial and non-financial internal control and risk management functions are operating effectively and reliably.
  • Provide an independent review of an entity’s reporting functions to ensure the integrity of financial reports.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of the entity’s performance management and performance information.
  • Provide strong and effective oversight of an entity’s internal audit function.
  • Provide effective liaison and facilitate communication between management and external audit.
  • Provide oversight of the implementation of accepted audit recommendations.
  • Ensure the entity effectively monitors compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements and promotes a culture committed to lawful and ethical behavior.

The Council may from time to time appoint such other Ad Hoc committees as it may deem necessary for the effective carrying out of its functions under this Act. Ad Hoc Committees are established under section 4A(2) of CAP 253.
