The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council is mandated under Cap 253 Laws of Kenya (Health Institutions. Sec 15) to register and issue annual licenses to all private, community and faith-based health facilities.
- A person or an organization may apply to the Council for the registration of a health institution in the prescribed form which shall be accompanied by the prescribed fee.
- Where the applicant satisfies the Council that the institution meets the requirements for registration, the Council shall register the facility as an approved health institution.
- The Council shall issue to every approved health institution registered under this Act, a certificate of registration in the prescribed form.
- The Council shall issue in accordance with this section and rules made under this Act, a license authorizing the use of any premises as a health institution.
- An application for a license shall be made to the Council in the prescribed form and accompanied by the prescribed fees and shall be made on or before the thirtieth of October of each practicing year.
- A license issued under this section shall bear the date of day on which it is issued and shall have effect from that date: Provided that a license issued during the first month of any practicing year shall have effect for all purposes from the beginning of that month.
- A license issued under this section shall be displayed in a conspicuous place at the health institution to which the license relates.
- A license issued under this section shall specify the nature of services that may be provided by the health institution.
- The Council may decline to renew, cancel, withdraw or revoke any license issued under this section, if it is satisfied that the health institution is being operated in a manner that contravenes any provisions of the Act or any regulations made under this Act.
- A health institution registered under this Act shall be inspected by the Council.
- No premise shall be used by any person as a health institution unless it is registered and licensed for such use by the Council.

The registration process of a health facility includes:
- a) Inspection of the facility by the County Health Management Team
- b) Duly filled form for Registration of a Health Facility accessed through the link https://kmpdc.go.ke/resources/Application_For_Reg_of_a_Prvte_Med_Inst_2017.pdf
- c) Payment of the Prescribed Fees (Based on the Level and Facility Type)
- d) Approval of the application by the Inspections, Licensing, Finance and General Purposes Committee
- e) Issuance of the Registration Certificate
